How’s your iPhone 3G on iOS 4 working?

iphone_3g_broken_spotlight

It’s been a little while now since iOS 4 was released so we thought we’d check back and see how it’s working (or not) for those of you with the 2008 iPhone 3G?

My iPhone 3G (above, yeah, cracked perhaps a tad poetically) really chugged away at first, but after a clean install (not restored from backup) and turning off Spotlight Search, it’s working much better now. Of course, if you’ve gotten used to an iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS, it’s obviously slower but if its your one and only — or newly acquired hand-me-down, it’s almost as fast as it was under iOS 3.x.

Let us know your experience, and if you’ve come across any other speed tips we’d love to hear them.

Case-Mate Gelli Case for iPhone 4 – accessory review

If you’re looking for a thin, durable, and stylish skin case to add a splash of color to your iPhone 4, the Case-Mate Gelli Case for iPhone 4 may be exactly what you’re after. It’s thermoplastic material feels great in your hand and it’s chic design is sure to make heads turn!

The Case-Mate Gelli is made from a thermoplastic translucent material that Case-Mate claims is lighter, softer and more resilient than silicone and rubber cases. It adds just enough traction to prevent your precious iPhone from sliding on surfaces, yet smooth enough to allow your iPhone to be easily removed from tight jean pockets.

This case offers great protection to the iPhone 4 while still allowing easy access to all ports and controls. The spaces between the dock connector and mic/speaker phone are also exposed allowing 3rd party cables to easily plug into the iPhone 4.

The fit of the Case-Mate Gelli is very snug and thin. However, since the material is thin, the lip that curls around the sides of the iPhone 4 and onto the screen can be easily pushed off the screen. This allows for dust to easily collect under the case and I catch myself wiping out dust several times a day. However, I have not experienced and scratching to the screen because of this.

The Case-Mate Gelli is a very fashionable case and is available in 6 colors. Pink, Aurora (yellow), and Tomato have the kaleidoscope design (see pictures for a closer look). Teal Blue, Clear, and Gray come in the checkmate design. This style has squares and triangles instead of circles.

If you’re looking for something thin, stylish, and protective, check out the Case-Mate Gelli Case for iPhone 4 available now from the TiPb iPhone 4 accessory store.

Pros

Thin, flexible, yet protective
Fashionable
Access to all ports and controls

Cons

Collects dust on the edges of the screen

Apple Peel case attempts to turn iPod touch into iPhone

Apple peel 520 case turns iPod touch into iPhone

Apple Peel 520 is an adapter case that just might hack your iPod touch into something closer to an iPhone, courtesy of a VoIP client, SIM card, and a dream:

Powered by an Infineon baseband chip, this adapter not only offers voice calling and text messaging (presumably requiring a jailbroken iPod touch for the apps; GPRS not possible yet), but it also doubles up as an 800mAh battery and provides 4.5 hours of call time or 120 hours of standby juice.

Whether this ever hits the market in Asia — let alone North America — is anyone’s guess but if it did show up, would you want?

Apple releases Safari 5 extensions for Mac/Windows. Can we have it for iPhone and iPad as well?

Apple Safari Extensions Gallery

Apple has just announced an update for Safari 5 that enables extensions (plugins), something Mozilla’s Firefox and Google’s Chrome have had for a while now. We’re happy for our big desktop brothers, of course. Really. Truly. But in our minds a lot of the stuff you’ll read about after the break would be even better suited on mobile devices like iPhone and iPad. That’s where convenient extensions like password managers would shine.

Maybe iOS 5?

Read on for the good bits from the presser.

[Apple PR, Apple Safari Extensions Gallery]

“Safari 5 has been a big hit, and user response to the innovative new Safari Reader has been fantastic,” said Brian Croll, Apple’s vice president of OS X Product Marketing. “We’re thrilled to see so many leading developers creating great extensions and think our users are going to love being able to customize Safari.”

“Millions of our customers already use Amazon Wish Lists to store items they want to buy for themselves or receive as gifts,” said Gianna Puerini, vice president of Worldwide Design and Community at Amazon.com. “With Safari 5, we were able to quickly build the Add to Amazon Wish List extension that lets customers add items from any website to their Amazon Wish List with the click of a button.”

“We’re excited to continue working closely with Apple to bring visually compelling Bing experiences to Safari,” said Jeff Henshaw, general manager of Bing User Experience. “The Bing Extension for Safari brings Bing search intelligence to everyday browsing with Safari. When a user selects text in Safari, Bing instantly recognizes what they might need and pops up helpful, informative tips, from real time maps and driving directions to real time translations to direct web search results.”

“Using web standard technologies and Safari’s extension builder, we developed an MLB.com extension to give fans another way to consume up-to-the-moment baseball content, including live look-ins to games, right from the Safari toolbar,” said Noah Garden, executive vice president, Commerce and Sponsorship at MLB.com.

The Safari Extensions Gallery is accessible from the Safari menu or at extensions.apple.com. Users can download and install extensions from the gallery with a single click, and there’s no need to restart the browser. Extensions can be automatically updated and are easily managed within Safari. Users can enable or disable individual extensions, or turn off all extensions with one click.

Safari Extensions are built with HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript web standards, and can have all the power and functionality of advanced web applications. Every Safari Extension is signed with a digital certificate from Apple to prevent tampering and to verify that updates to the extension are from the original developer. Safari Extensions are sandboxed, so they can’t access information on a user’s system or communicate with websites aside from those specified by the developer. For increased stability, Safari Extensions run solely in the browser.
“Our extension for Safari is a great way for readers to get all of the latest breaking news and all the important stories, blogs and columns they want to see,” said Denise Warren, general manager, NYTimes.com at The New York Times Company. “While you browse other sites in Safari, our extension checks for updates and slides in new headlines and thumbnails, so you won’t miss a thing.”

“Creating our Twitter extension in Safari couldn’t have been easier,” said Jason Goldman, vice president of Product at Twitter. “By providing features like the ability to tweet about a page and view trending topics, we’ve created a simple way to deliver relevant, interesting content to people regardless of where they are on the web.”

Scoble death-grips Android Captivate before Apple

AT&T Captivate vs iPhone 4 death grip

We’re guessing Apple will get an AT&T Captivate (or similar Samsung Galaxy S-class device) death-grip video up sooner or later, but in the meantime… Scoble to the rescue!

He shows both devices in the same area on the same network dropping bars and, he says, calls. We get it. Manufacturers aren’t perfect. Phones aren’t perfect. How many more videos will we get before this meme dies like bars beneath watery flesh?

And no, it’s not an outsource, just yet another video making its hits off the antennagate saga where no phone, on no carrier is safe. Now before anyone cries “yeah, but iPhone 4 only needs a death-touch, not a death-grip!“, we’ve already seen other videos showing the Galaxy getting killed by a single finger as well.

Of course, iPhone 4 is iPhone 4 in every market and on every carrier, so if anyone has a problem it’s very easy to find out about everyone else who has that problem. With other devices, if someone has a problem with a Captivate will that get tracked to someone else with a problem on a Vibrant on T-Mobile, or a Galaxy in Europe?

No doubt Consumer Reports is on top of that.

Apple bumpers arriving, Best Buy giving away free side film for iPhone 4

Apple iPhone 4 free bumper case

TiPb iPhone Forum user shaolinfinest let us know last night, and many others have since confirmed, that Best Buy was starting to give away InvisibleShielf protective side films for iPhone 4:

I’m not sure if this has been discussed but Best Buy is starting to receive Zagg kits called “iPhone 4fix” or something like that. Basically Zagg sent us a bunch of invisishield sides to put on customers iPhone 4’s and they are free. The only disclaimer on the kit is that it says shield and install is free but install is up to the associate if they want to put it on or not. Before going in, call your local Best Buy if you are like me and don’t want to put a case on it. I installed the sides today and it was easy to put on and feels ok so far.

Whether or not InvisibleShield provides any protection from signal loss if you’re prone to such things in your area is debatable, but it’s interesting to see how other retailers are competing with Apple’s free bumper program.

Speaking of which, the TiPb iPhone 4 store has the full on front-and-back-protecting InvisibleShield and BodyGuardz in stock, and the Case-Mate Clear Armor available for pre-order. Just don’t use as much liquid to apply it as Dieter did…

We’ve also started to hear that folks are receiving their free Apple bumpers, in some cases a month or more ahead of the previously suggested delivery date. Those who asked for 3rd party cases instead haven’t had any such luck so far.

Of course, Apple’s free bumpers are pretty much restricted to black, and the TiPb iPhone 4 store has more cases in more colors than you can shake a gyro at, so check out Leanna going red, or pick out a color all your own.

See Apple and Best Buy, you don’t get to have all the fun!

[Okay, that was snarky enough to earn a “sponsored” tag]

Recordable DVD Formats Explained

Lagret under: Ukategorisert — philipratliff1954 @ 18:56

The real problem in identifying what DVD software would best suit your needs actually comes from the lack of a standard definition of each type. In addition to that the technology of dealing with DVDs has stabilised through development so that just burning a DVD would hardly be described as rocket science anymore!

This has resulted in many of the DVD software brands branching out into other functions in an effort to attract customers through added features and benefits. This merging of the various things you may want to do with a DVD has resulted in it becoming rather unclear as to which software you should get to suit your particular needs.

DVD Copying Software.

This is DVD software that has, as its main purpose, the simple action of copying a DVD onto another DVD. It will generally do this by first making a copy on to the hard drive of your computer then using that copy to burn to a new blank DVD. Generally this will be an automated process.

A variation of this is DVD Ripping where the software deconstructs the original DVDs contents into its various files and folders while it is being copied to the computer hard drive. This allows some degree of manipulation prior to burning a new DVD. Pure DVD Copying software is very often combined with the ability to make basic edits and changes to parts of the DVD and remove unwanted features like subtitles or extra content.

DVD Conversion Software.

The primary function here is to take the contents of an existing DVD and convert them into another format. For example a home made video DVD being converted to a more compressed video format for uploading on to YouTube or similar or for viewing on a computer.

A good example of a combination of DVD Copying Software and DVD Conversion Software would be a product called DVD Fab. This is software that allows DVD copying in many forms with a high degree of control over the final output combined with the ability to convert the contents of the DVD to other formats.

DVD Burning Software.

The main purpose of DVD burning software is to take data from a computer and transfer it on to a DVD disc. This occurs in two ways depending on what is being burned.

In the case of data such as files, folders or documents this is a pretty straightforward process of copying that data and placing it on the DVD in such a way that other programs can read what is there.

In the case of video DVDs it is a slightly more complicated procedure. There are certain protocols that determine how a video DVD must be written on to a disc. DVD burning software has the ability to understand and create those protocols as it is burning. The DVD Burning ROM of NERO 9 would be an example of this. This does, however, lead to another type of DVD software.

DVD Authoring Software.

DVD authoring is the action of creating the DVD structure (including menus, buttons, subtitles and reference to special features) that you would find on a video DVD. The video on a DVD is actually a type of video file called MPEG2. If you just burned the MPEG2 on to a disc a DVD player would not be able to recognise or play that file. The file has to be “wrapped” in a certain type of structure for the DVD player to be able to play it.

Also, the disc needs to have menus created so that both you and the player can navigate around the disc and play the parts you want. The creation of all of this is the job of DVD authoring software. Corel DVD Movie Factory would be an example of DVD authoring software and all such software must also have the ability to burn the DVD as well as create the structure.

DVD Editing Software.

Many people search in the internet for this and probably get a little frustrated as to why they can not get a definitive result. The reason for that is that the term itself is a bit of a misnomer. It is unclear whether the person wishes to edit the structure of the DVD (menus, movie titles etc.) or whether they are seeking to edit the actual video.

In reality if you want to re-edit or manipulate the menus or features that are on a DVD and then burn to a new DVD that action would be covered by either a DVD copying or conversion software as mentioned above.

If what you want is to re-edit the actual video itself on a DVD then DVD software is not really designed to do that. This activity has now crossed over into the field of video editing software. Having said that there still is a range of DVD software suites that do include this function as an added feature. Nero 9 and Roxio Creator 2009 have this ability.

DVD Merging or Combining Software.

This one really suffers from the loose definitions of all of these functions. Most DVD copying software or conversion software offers the ability to take a couple of DVDs or more and have you re-combine the contents on to a newly created DVD. So you could say they merge or combine DVDs.

However there is another very specific action which is the merging of two, three or even four DVDs into one DVD but at the same time retaining the menus of the original DVDs. The most common need for this is the case of DVD camcorders that record to 8cm or “mini” DVDs.

People who re-use their 8cm RW DVDs or who wish to archive their recordings may want to transfer the contents of a few of those DVDs on to one full sized DVD and save some space. Simply copying the contents of the DVDs over on to one full DVD would result in the loss of the menus of the original DVDs. That would mean you would have hundreds of individual MPEG2 files on a disc and no way of knowing which one is which. Simply a sea of MPEG2 icons in a folder!

There is only one software I know of that can handle that problem and is the only one I know of that could be described as DVD Merging software. It's name is DVDRemake and it can merge or combine two, three or even four DVDs on to one without losing the original menus. Very handy for the DVD camcorder enthusiast.

Finally! DVD Data Recovery and DVD Repair Software.

As much as the manufacturers of DVDs, DVD burning software and DVD burners would have you believe that DVD is somehow perfect because it is digital that is very far from the truth. DVDs can get burned with errors, get scratched, or have errors “built in” because of glitches in the software being used or even the computer being used.

For such occurrences we have this category of DVD software. Generally speaking we are now getting down to some very specialised software that can correct existing errors in DVDs. Of course when you get these errors you will get nonsensical and meaningless messages such as “no disc” (even though you can see one!), “disc error” (well duh!), “invalid DVD navigation structure” (my personal favorite!) and a whole range of others. Without going into the myriad of available specialist software for this it is interesting to note that Nero 9 now has a module within it to handle a great number of these problems called RescueAgent.

So, that got a whole lot more complicated than I intended but I hope at least it will provide you with a general guide to the various functions of DVD software.

How to Copy a DVD and Put the Movie onto an IPod Touch

Lagret under: Ukategorisert — philipratliff1954 @ 16:15

It seems as if these days, if you need to put videos on your iPod or iPhone or Apple TV, there are dozens of choices. Some of them are free, but hard to understand, while others are incredibly simple and cheap, but not very powerful. I recently found a program I think fits nicely in the middle.

The name of the program is ViddyUp, and it comes from Splasm Software, the makers of a checkbook application - cleverly enough, called “Checkbook” - that I used to use a long time ago. ViddyUp is shareware, but as opposed to other converting software, is relatively inexpensive, with a full license only costing around ten dollars.

ViddyUp uses a single-window interface, which is incredibly simple to use. Simply drag a video (or videos), you want to convert, and after a second you'll be shown the standard embedded Quicktime view of the movie. You can then choose which format to convert the video into, either the standard MPEG-4 (which offers quick converting and fairly good quality), or else H.264 (which takes a bit longer to encode, but provides excellent quality at smaller file sizes). As well, you can perform either single-pass or double-pass encoding with H.264, which will produce even better output, but will take twice as long.

In the main window, under the preview player, you'll see a dropdown menu, which contains quite a few standard options for exporting, either a small, 320×240 size video for the iPod, or else a larger size for Apple TV. Of course, if you want you can choose to get down and dirty with the conversion and - using the standard Quicktime options - encode at whatever size/bitrate combination you want.

Once you've selected your preferred export format/size, simply hit the button at the bottom of the window to begin the encoding process. If you've dragged more than one video into the ViddyUp window, you'll see a side drawer that shows each movie (and its export format), along with the brushed metal dialog that shows the encoding process. You'll be able to see how much time has elapsed in the encoding process, and how much time remains.

When the encoding has finished, ViddyUp will take the newly encoded file and place it in your iTunes folder and - when you next open iTunes (which should happen automatically) - you'll see it in its own ViddyUp Playlist.

In my testing, ViddyUp did a good job of encoding. I used the highest quality setting, and the resulting file (which came from a high quality DVD rip), still looked great, even in full screen mode. The demo version of ViddyUp, which is what I used, only encodes the first two and a half minutes of any video (for incentive to purchase the license, of course), but that was enough to give me an idea of how good it encodes.

And it's fine. Of course, it's using the Quicktime encoding engine to do the work, but what ViddyUp provides is a simple interface, filled with the correct presets, to make sure that your encode will play perfectly on your iPod (or other device). And, you don't need to purchase Quicktime Pro in order to get the encoding ability! And really, that's what makes it so good. It isn't doing anything you couldn't do without it, but it does it easily, and saves you twenty dollars at the same time.

Good night WWDC 2010, see you next year

WWDC 2010 Moscone at night

In with the roar of iPhone 4, out with the whisper of tuckered developers jetting home, WWDC 2010 draws to a close. What with the aforementioned new hardware, the Gold Master seed of the newly renamed iOS 4, Safari 5, Xcode 4, and more secret sessions than any non-Vulcan brain could comfortably take in, there’s no doubt we’ll be seeing even more amazing iPhone and iPad apps and soon.

We have a bunch more video interviews still to edit and post, including such luminaries as 1Password, Bjango, Navigon, and Glasshouse.

For now we’ll leave you to talk among yourselves while we fall blissfully unconscious. Topics for comment – favorite WWDC announcement, biggest thing missing, what didn’t get enough attention and really should have, what got too much — or pretty much anything else you’d like.

See you next year, WWDC 2011 (and iPhone 5!)

Smartphone Experts S&C retractable cable for iPhone and iPad – accessory review

The Smartphone Experts S&C retractable sync and charging cable for iPhone and iPad [$4.95 - TiPb Store Link] is for those who abhor long cables that always getting caught, tangled and the imposing clutter, the SmartPhone Experts S&C Retractable Cable for iPhone is the way to go. Small and lightweight, you can take it with you everywhere and charge/sync your iPhone through the USB connection on your laptop or computer with ease.

The Smartphone Experts S&C Retractable Cable for iPhone expands to a length of 2 ft. and has a locking feature which allows you to choose which length you would like the cable locked at. A light tug on the cable and it retracts back to its wound state. When wound, the Cable is only 4.5 inches long, making it very easy to bring with you. My regular usb S&C cable was always a tangled mess when I carried it loose in my briefcase. A good deal of time and effort was spent on untangling the cord from whatever it had become attached to. With the Smartphone Experts S&C Retractable Cable for iPhone, charging and syncing my iPhone is a snap, just take it out of my briefcase and plug it in and when I am done a quick tug and is thrown back into my bag. The cable is quite well constructed and after a month of use it is still working like new.

I would recommend getting this for everyone who charges and syncs their iPhone. I absolutely love this Cable and at $4.95 it is practically free (appeals to my Scottish side).

Pictures and video after the break!
